Earth Flashpoint (Or “A Story I’d Love to Read”)

Flashpoint, last year’s major event from DC Comics, was a divisive book in the fan community. It featured an extremely large number of tie-in issues (56, more than 11 times the amount of the issues in the main series). Many felt that the series was poorly paced and would have fared better as a story in the main Flash book rather than as a separate event. The (somewhat tacked on, imo) ending brought about the New 52, which in and of itself is a major point of contention among fans. I really enjoyed the main story for what it was and even enjoyed some of the tie-in issues. My biggest gripe about the Flashpoint series is, honestly, I’d like some more please. Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert, along with all the creative teams on the tie-in issues, created a unique take on the DC universe that I find more interesting than the New 52 universe in a lot of ways. There are so many potential stories left to be told in the Flashpoint universe. DC recently began dipping their toes into alternate earth stories again in James Robinson’s Earth 2, would it be so unreasonable to have a sequel, or perhaps even an ongoing series, set on the Flashpoint earth? The ending of Flashpoint was extremely vague about the fate of the Flashpoint Universe. While it was definitely in pretty bad shape, there’s definitely a chance that it could’ve lived on. I’d love to ask Geoff Johns personally, but it’s unlikely I’ll ever get that chance. For now, here are some ideas I have for some great story opportunities set in the Flashpoint earth. Soliciting Marvel Comics: September 2012

As I did with DC’s solicitations on Monday, today I’ll be examining Marvel’s September solicits. Avengers vs. X-Men, arguably Marvel’s biggest event since Civil War, wraps up and September and with it comes a bevy and tie-ins and rumors of what is to come. Rumor mill site Bleeding Cool has been posting rumored and speculated creative changes to Marvel’s major books all day. So far the list looks something like:

Granted these are all rumors, but the fact that many of these creators are known for working together, plus other factors detailed by Bleeding Cool lend a strong hint of legitimacy. With such a major game of musical chairs and at the creation of at least one new title, one may be left wonder were some of the second and third string stories are going to land. Oh well, off of my tangent and on to Marvel’s September solicits, which can be seen in full here. Continue reading

Soliciting DC Comics: September 2012

It’s common practice in the comic book industry for companies to release solicits for their comic books three months in advance. This is done so that retailers can have plenty of time to plan their purchases for that month and to alert them to any major releases that need special attention. While solicitations are intended to be a tool for retailers, they also give fans a look at what’s coming up in their favorite books. Starting this month I’ll be going over solicitations from major comic companies as they are released and talking about what books look interesting to me. I was inspired to do this by similar articles at the comic site multiversity.com. Today DC Comics released their solicits for the month of September and with them comes news of zero issues, new series, and some cancellations. DC’s full solicitation list can be found here. The New 52: Zero Issues and the Third Wave

Oh man I love news like this. Today DC announced that they would be releasing #0 issues for all New 52 books in September, in conjunction with the one year anniversary of the New 52. These “0” issues will act as a kind of prequel to the #1 issues released last year, providing back-story and important revelations for the New 52. If that wasn’t exciting enough, DC also announced that they would roll of the third wave of New 52 books that month as well. Similar to the second wave, these 4 books will replace under-performing titles in the New 52. DC has already announced the cancellation of Justice League International and is likely to announce the other three in the near future. Much like I did after the announcement of the second wave, I’ll give my thoughts on the new books as well as my initial interest level.

New 52 Power Rankings: May 2012

Last month I mentioned that my top 10 list was becoming a bit stagnant with the same titles appearing over and over at similar rankings. However, with DC’s second wave and a few interesting creative changes, things got shaken up a bit in the month of May. As usual, here are my 10 favorite books from DC’s New 52 last month.
